Microsoft’s Yahoo-less Advertising Conference
When Microsoft invited its advertising customers for an annual gathering in Seattle a year ago, one of the main attractions was Terry Semel, who was then the chief executive of Yahoo. News that Microsoft and Yahoo had held discussions about a possible merger leaked before the event, and everyone was hoping to find out more.
No luck. In a series of presentations, Microsoft executives and others barely mentioned Yahoo. Mr. Semel talked about Yahoo’s business and left quickly without answering questions from reporters.
This year is not much different. Hundreds of advertisers and agencies are gathered at Microsoft’s headquarters in Redmond, Wash., for Advance08, to hear what the software giant has to offer them. The answer, so far, includes: new ads on mobile phones; better integration of Microsoft technologies and salespeople with those of aQuantive, which Microsoft acquired last year; the promise of being able to run campaigns across the PC, TV, Xbox, Zune and mobile phone; and a new brand for all of Microsoft’s advertising services dubbed, well, Microsoft Advertising.
Once again, Yahoo is the elephant in the room–and the topic that many people are most interested in.
That’s not surprising on a few counts. First, the potential merger between Microsoft and Yahoo would instantly transform the online advertising world. Second, the courtship, now in its fourth month, has turned into a riveting, high-stakes soap opera.
But the keen interest in Yahoo over products also highlights another issue: Microsoft has not lacked for good advertising products and technology. “They’re very innovative and great to work with,” said Steve Kaufman, a senior vice president at Digitas, a digital advertising agency.
What Microsoft has lacks is scale, the ability to reach enough customers, especially in search, to make it vital for advertisers. Yahoo would give it scale instantly. Anything short of that, including an expected announcement Wednesday about improvements in Microsoft’s search, are unlikely to solve Microsoft’s significant challenges in online advertising in the short term.
The many Microsoft employees who are present at the event appear to be aware of that. When you ask them about Yahoo, many beam a knowing smile and say something along the lines of: “You know I can’t talk about that.”

Tibetan govt-in-exile calls for halt to anti-China protests
DHARAMSALA: The Tibetan government-in-exile on Wednesday called for a temporary halt to anti-China protests to express solidarity with the victims of the recent earthquake in southwest China's Sichuan province.
"In order to express our solidarity with the great natural disaster that befell on China, Tibetans across the world should shun staging demonstrations in front of Chinese embassies in the respective host countries they live in at least till about the end of May," said a statement issued by the Tibetan government-in-exile.
According to the statement, exiled Tibetans have offered prayers for the victims of the earthquake that struck Southwest China on May 12.
Quoting the Dalai Lama, who is on a five-day visit to Germany, the statement said: "Let us pray and express our condolences to the Chinese people. Let us share this sadness of thousands and thousands of Chinese who suffered due to the earthquake."
The Tibetan government-in-exile had organised a special prayer session for the earthquake victims at the main Buddhist temple in Dharamsala on Tuesday.
It issued guidelines asking for a temporary halt to the protests and the Tibetans to organise prayer meetings and raise donations for the quake victims.
"Write a letter, or send a message, to the concerned that they are doing so in solidarity with the quake victims," the guidelines added.
Karma Chophel, Speaker of the Tibetan parliament-in- exile, in his address at a prayer session in Dharamsala on May 19 had asked the Tibetans to put off protests in front of Chinese embassies until the end of May.

Left bites the dust in Nandigram
In a jolt to the CPM-led Left Front, Trinamool Congress on Wednesday defeated its candidates in trouble-torn Nandigram in the three-tier panchayat elections in West Bengal.
The Front also faced rout in three Zilla Parishad seats in Singur to Trinamool Congress candidates.
The polls are seen as a litmus test for the Buddhadeb Bhattacherjee government's farmland acquisition policy for industries.
Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress wrested control of Zilla Parishad in East Midnapur where trouble-torn Nandigram is located. It won 32 of the 53 seats, results of which were declared so far.
In Nandigram the CPM has lost 3 of the 4 Zilla Parishad seats and is trailing in the fourth. In stark contrast to the panchayat polls of 2003 when the Left had bagged all 4 zilla parishad seats.
In Singur the other troubled zone the CPM has lost in all 3 Zilla Parishad seats.
It is the first time that Trinamool Congress gained control over a Zilla Parishad, the main decision-making body in the district. In the last poll in 2003, the Trinamool had two seats in the Zilla Parishad.
Never before has the industry been a major plank in the panchayat polls, particular in Nandigram and Singur.
The Left Front was, however, was maintaining a lead in other districts and having a neck-and-neck contest in zilla parishad seats in Congress strongholds of Murshidabad and Malda.
Polls were held to the three-tier panchayat system in three phases on May 11,14 and 18.
In Nandigram 14 people were killed in police firing here during clashes over the proposed acquisition of land for a chemical hub.

LORD SHIVA
The common thread of thought in the religious beliefs of the Indian subcontinent upholds a single Reality (as in absolute monoism) and holds in reverence each of the several manifestation of the Ultimate Reality in the forms of Gods. Bhrama, Vishnu and Shiva are revered as the Supreme Trinity of multitude of manifestations of Divinity. It is said that all that is true, all that is good and all that is beautiful is God (Satyam Shivam Sundaram).
Shiva is referred to as 'the good one' or the 'auspicious one'. Shiva - Rudra is considered to be the destroyer of evil and sorrow. Shiva - Shankara is the doer of good. Shiva is 'tri netra' or three eyed, and is 'neela kantha' - blue necked (having consumed poison to save the world from destruction. Shiva - Nataraja is the Divine Cosmic Dancer. Shiva - Ardhanareeswara is both man and woman.
He is both static and dynamic and is both creator and destroyer. He is the oldest and the youngest, he is the eternal youth as well as the infant. He is the source of fertility in all living beings. He has gentle as well as fierce forms. Shiva is the greatest of renouncers as well as the ideal lover. He destroyes evil and protects good. He bestows prosperity on worshipers although he is austere. He is omnipresent and resides in everyone as pure consciousness.
Shiva is inseparable from Shakti - Parvati the daughter of Himavaan - Haimavati. There is no Shiva without Shakti and no Shakti without Shiva, the two are one - or the absolute state of being - consciousness and bliss.
The five mantras that constitute Shiva's body are Sadyojaata, Vaamadeva, Aghora, Tatpurusha and Eesaana. Eesaana is Shiva not visible to the human eye, Sadyojaata is Shiva realized in his basic reality (as in the element earth, in the sense of smell, in the power of procreation and in the mind). The Vishnudharmottara Purana of the 6th century CE assigns a face and an element to each of the above mantras. (Sadyojaata - earth, Vaamadeva - water, Aghora - fire, Tatpurusha - air and Eesaana - space).
The names of the deified faces with their elements are Mahadeva (earth), Bhairava (fire), Nandi (air), Uma (water) and Sadasiva (space). Panchamukha lingams have been seen from the 2nd century onwards. The Trimurthi Sadasiva image of Shiva in the Elephanta Caves near Mumbai is a portrayal in stone, of the five faces of Shiva. The fourth and the fifth heads are not seen in this image here.
The works of sages Vyasa, Vasishta, Patanjali, the poet Kalidasa, the tamil saint poets Nayanmars - Appar, Sundarar, Sambandar, the poet Manikkavachakar, the mystic tamil siddhas, tantric philosophers, the spiritual leader Adi Sankaracharya and others such as Basavanna and Appayya Deekshitar speak of the attributes of Shiva
