Africa puts price tag on climate change
According to a draft resolution seen by Reuters on Monday, African leaders will ask rich countries to pay 67 billion US Dollars annually to African countries to mitigate the impact of global warming on the world’s poorest continent. The resolution came out of a meeting held by 10 African leaders in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa to find a common stance ahead of the UN climate conference in Copenhagen in December. Africa’s ability to negotiate has been limited seriously in the past because of a lack of a coherent stance on global warming among African governments. "The negotiating team needs to be backed with the political weight at the highest level in the continent to ensure that the African voice on climate change negotiations is taken with the seriousness it deserves," the document said.
